Conference BNLA – Questions raised by the use of scientific experts in the political decision-making process [20/06/13]

The role of experts in the nuclear area and the weight attributed to their opinion are more than ever burning issues. This presentation will discuss the relationship between expertise and its communication, with examples from the nuclear sector. Professor Bréchet will address the role of expert opinion in the democratic decision-making process, the position of the experts in modern democracies, the necessary distinction between advice and decision, as well as the risk of self-proclaimed expertise. Professor Bréchet will comment upon these issues from the viewpoint of scientific ethics and of the relationship between science and politics, as well as from the legal angle.
